NJI is a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1972. Our program was the first formal psychoanalytic training program for non-medical professionals in New Jersey to be accredited by the American Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis, Inc. (ABAP). We are a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP). We also partner with the Neil Wilson Psychoanalytic Clinic. Candidates who are training at NJI can become affiliated with the Clinic to work with patients under clinical supervision.
NJI is a volunteer organization. Our faculty and boards are staffed by dedicated professionals who volunteer their time to promote psychoanalysis. Our organization was chartered to present, sponsor, and offer a comprehensive post-graduate psychoanalytic training program to a broad base of interested and qualified professionals, and to establish a psychoanalytic community in New Jersey.

NJI offers comprehensive psychoanalytic training in a supportive environment, preparing our candidates to meet the challenges of clinical practice. Our curriculum covers the development of psychoanalysis across all of the schools of thought which originated from Freud’s groundbreaking contributions.
In 2022, NJI celebrated its 50th anniversary. Our institute has certified more than 100 analysts. NJI was co-founded by two graduates of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP), Joel Bernstein, PhD and Neil Wilson PhD. Initially, NJI’s training program followed the NPAP program. NJI’s first class was held in September 1972 in a rented office suite in a medical professional building at 800 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ. During that first year, courses were taught by Joel Bernstein, Neil Wilson, and Michaela Babakin. The following year, William Krawosky and Art Robbins joined the faculty. In April 1980, NJI was incorporated as a nonprofit and moved to a Dutch colonial brownstone house at 800 Catalpa Ave in Teaneck, NJ. In 2008, NJI moved again to its current location at 121 Cedar Lane in Teaneck, NJ.
