Advanced Psychoanalytic Certification Program

This is a comprehensive 5-year program that leads to New Jersey State Certification as a Psychoanalyst. This is an advanced postgraduate training program for graduate level professionals in a variety of disciplines. Our program was the first formal psychoanalytic training program for non-medical professionals in the State of New Jersey to be accredited by the American Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis, Inc. (ABAP). There are thorough requirements for coursework, clinical supervision, and personal psychoanalysis. Candidates will achieve competency in advanced psychoanalytic theory and in the independent practice of psychoanalytic treatment. Courses are taught online.

Program Requirements

Theoretical Foundation:

  • 5-year curriculum of 30 courses

Psychoanalysis

  • 450 hours of personal psychoanalysis
  • 150 hours of the 450 hours must comprise 3 sessions per week psychoanalysis
  • Personal analysis must begin no later than the second year of the program

Clinical Supervision

  • Supervision with 3 control analysts approved by NJI.
  • 78 hours with each of the first two controls and at least 52 hours with the third control

Final Case Paper and Presentation

  • To be eligible to write the final case paper the candidate must have seen a patient in three-times a week psychoanalysis analysis for a minimum of 2 years
  • The oral defense will be scheduled by the candidate’s paper committee after the final case paper has been accepted by the four members of the candidate’s committee
  • The candidate must remain in supervision until certification as a psychoanalyst is achieved

Tuition and Fees

  • Tuition per course is $400.00
  • Fall Semester Registration Fee is $115.00 (includes membership to Psychoanalytic Candidates Organization and Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing)
  • Spring Semester Registration Fee for Existing Candidates is $50.00
  • Supervision fees are directly negotiated directly with the Supervisor who must be approved by NJI. NJI will provide a list of flexible-fee supervisors. Supervision cannot exceed $125.00 per session.
  • Psychoanalysis fees are directly negotiated directly with the Psychoanalyst who must be approved by NJI. NJI will provide a list of flexible-fee psychoanalysis.
