COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course presents Sigmund Freud’s theory of dreams as detailed in his 1900 classic, The Interpretation of Dreams. The eight classes combine didactic instruction and candidate discussion. Each class is organized around dream research problems as identified by Freud in his original text: Sigmund Freud: The Interpretation of Dreams. The presentation of each problem is supplemented with readings and observations from contemporary research findings. Manifest and latent content, regression, primary process, day residue, repression, condensation, displacement, free associations of the dreamer, and so forth will be reviewed from a psychoanalytic vantage point.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: 

Jodi Kosofsky MA, LP, NJPsyA, NCPsyA

Jodi Kosofsky MA, LP, NJPsyA, NCPsyA received her MA in Counseling from New York University and completed her advanced training as a Psychoanalyst from The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP) in New York City. She is both a New Jersey Certified and New York State licensed Psychoanalyst. At The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis (NJI), she has been a faculty member, training analyst and supervisor for the last twenty-three years.  She is the current NJI Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program beginning in 2011.  In the past, she maintained a private practice with both adults and adolescents in New York City for over twenty-five years. In 2011, Jodi was presented with the outstanding service award in recognition of her outstanding efforts and constant attention to detail, quality, and principles upon which NJI was founded.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the completion of this course the students will be able to:

• Identify two research endorsements indicating dreams’ ubiquitous and significance across time and culture.
• List and examine five steps essential to Freud’s method of dream interpretation.
• Explain Freud’s distinction between manifest and latent dream content.
• Identify and analyze two therapeutic gains stemming from dream work.
• Explain Freud’s assertions linking dream formation to unconscious psychological processes including day residue, repressed wishes, censorship, condensation, displacement, symbolization, transference, secondary elaboration, and temptation anxiety.
• Decode, decipher, and explain two examples of the relationship between memory and dreaming in the mutative role of dreaming.

Suitable for social workers. licensed professional counselors and other mental health professionals

This course takes place online with synchronous video on Zoom (fully interactive). System requirements are:

• Broadband Internet connection: Cable, High-speed DSL and any other medium that is internet accessible.

COSTS:

There is a $115.00 Fall Semester Registration Free which includes a one-year subscription to Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing PEP and a one-year membership to the Psychoanalytic Candidates Organization (PACO).

Refund policy: After the 4th class session, there is no refund. Monies paid for classes when candidates withdraw from the program after the 4th class, will be applied as a credit, if the candidate returns to NJI. If a candidate withdraws before the 4th class, 1/2 tuition will be refunded. (This excludes the registration fee of $115).
