The Relationship of Unresolved Childhood Conflicts: Symptom Formation and Subsequent Opioid Use

Objectives:

This workshop will define and examine opioid addiction as viewed through a psychoanalytic conceptual lens. One of the most comprehensive models for understanding opioid addiction comes from psychoanalytic theory because of its core conceptualization of “psychic determinism,” which assumes that all human behavior occurs for reasons often related to the operations of the unconscious. This will be discussed in detail, with specific relation to developmental stages that were first elucidated by Freud and his followers.

At the completion of this workshop, audience members will be able to do the following:

1. Define what is meant by the term addiction
2. Define what is meant by opioid
3. List three or more physiological effects of opioids
4. List three or more psychological effects of opioids
