COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course serves as an introductory survey of fundamental psychoanalytic concepts, which will include, but is not limited to, an emphasis on and appreciation of anxiety; the definitions and importance of the structural theory; the unconscious; transference; countertransference; and resistance.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Peter J. LaBarbera, LP, LCSW, NCPsyA
Peter J. LaBarbera is a practicing psychoanalyst in Manhattan and New Jersey. He graduated from the Hunter College School of Social Work with Honors in Groupwork, Group-Therapy Seminar, Field Placement, and Research/Program Evaluation. He received his psychoanalytic training and certification at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP). For a period of 27 years, he also worked as a school social worker providing on-going group and individual counseling services in the public high schools Of New York City, treating approximately 3,000 students.
From 1985 through 2002, he presented an ongoing series of lectures for mental health professionals in the educational field — focusing on the concept of utilizing group counseling technique and practice as a model for creating a “Holding Environment” in which group members would be able to develop trust, confidence, and feelings of safety. These clinical presentations highlighted technical procedures, as well as clinical vignettes demonstrating growth and progression in both academic and emotional areas. Sponsored by the High School Division Clinical Services Units of the NYC Department of Education, these presentations were held at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Columbia University, Office of the Superintendent Manhattan High Schools, Office of the Superintendent Brooklyn High Schools.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To gain an introductory level of understanding of the psychoanalytic terms and concepts that will be discussed and studied. An important emphasis will be placed on the unconscious, starting with the principal of psychic determinism, and including an in-depth look at the structural theory.
By the completion of this course the students will be able to:

There is a $115.00 Fall Semester Registration Free which includes a one-year subscription to Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing PEP and a one-year membership to the Psychoanalytic Candidates Organization (PACO).
Refund policy: After the 4th class session, there is no refund. Monies paid for classes when candidates withdraw from the program after the 4th class, will be applied as a credit, if the candidate returns to NJI. If a candidate withdraws before the 4th class, 1/2 tuition will be refunded. (This excludes the registration fee of $115).
