COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a particular school of psychoanalytic thought. Students will be given material derived from some of the major Ego psychological thinkers, like Heinz Hartmann, Ernst Kris, David Rapaport, Rudolph Loewenstein, and others, who greatly influenced the course that psychoanalysis took for some time.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Sheldon Weiss, LCSW

Sheldon Weiss, LCSW has been in full time private practice since 1985 providing individual, couple and family psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Teaneck, New Jersey and in New York City. His practice also includes private supervision to psychotherapists who are in various stages of their training and development.

He received his MSW in 1977 from Yeshiva University. In 1983 he received a certificate from the Washington Square Institute in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and in 1994 he received his certificate in Psychoanalysis from the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP).

He is also a member of the faculty and Training Board of The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis located in Teaneck, New Jersey.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the completion of this course the students will be able to:

  1. Identify a patient’s basic defenses that they use in treatment.
  2. Explain the difference between an ego defect and deficit and how this difference can impact therapy.
  3. Describe and assess the patient’s ego defects and/or deficits and show how this can impact their ability to utilize therapy and what modifications are necessary.
  4. Explain the basic differences between a topographic approach that focuses on uncovering unconscious content and the ego psychology approach that addresses the need to focus on a person’s defenses and character structure.
  5. Explain and describe at least 2 critiques of classical ego psychology theory and how this can affect technique in clinical work with patients.

Suitable for social workers. licensed professional counselors and other mental health professionals

TECHNOLOGY:

This course takes place online with synchronous video on Zoom (fully interactive). System requirements are:

  • Operating Systems: Windows XP or higher, MacOS 9 or higher, Android 4.0 or higher
  • Internet Browser: Internet Explorer 9.0 or higher, Google Chrome, Firefox 10.0 or higher
  • Broadband Internet connection: Cable, High-speed DSL and any other medium that is internet accessible.

COSTS:

There is a $115.00 Fall Semester Registration Free which includes a one-year subscription to Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing PEP and a one-year membership to the Psychoanalytic Candidates Organization (PACO).

Refund policy: After the 4th class session, there is no refund. Monies paid for classes when candidates withdraw from the program after the 4th class, will be applied as a credit, if the candidate returns to NJI. If a candidate withdraws before the 4th class, 1/2 tuition will be refunded. (This excludes the registration fee of $115).
