COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Material will be provided for the student to review information pertaining to the normal narcissistic stage of development, and so-called healthy narcissism, as described by Edith Jacobson. Primary and secondary narcissism will be defined and potential consequences of narcissistic injury, such as grandiosity, narcissistic rage, and other forms that it may take will be reviewed.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Rhonda Sarrazin, M.Ed., M. Div., Psy A

Rhonda Sarrazin, MDiv, PsyA is a recent graduate of the New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis. She is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Englewood, New Jersey and in Manhattan with an interest in the connection between religion and psychoanalysis, the symbolic in dreams, and patients that have narcissistic parents and narcissistic disorders. In 2019, she received a student Gradiva Award for her paper, “The Miraculous Life of St. Catherine Laboure: A Psychoanalytic Interpretation of her Dreams and Visions.”

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the completion of this course the students will be able to:

  1. Examine and appraise narcissistic character structure, and its implications.
  2. Analyze narcissism in the light of relationships, and how others are affected.
  3. Determine how narcissism presents during treatment and how it affects analysis.
  4. Examine the differences between narcissistic character and pathological narcissism.
  5. Consider how to treat narcissistic patients without judgement.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Suitable for social workers. licensed professional counselors and other mental health professionals

TECHNOLOGY:

This course takes place online with synchronous video on Zoom (fully interactive). System requirements are:

  • Operating Systems: Windows XP or higher, MacOS 9 or higher, Android 4.0 or higher
  • Internet Browser: Internet Explorer 9.0 or higher, Google Chrome, Firefox 10.0 or higher
  • Broadband Internet connection: Cable, High-speed DSL and any other medium that is internet accessible.

COSTS:

There is a $115.00 Fall Semester Registration Free which includes a one-year subscription to Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing PEP and a one-year membership to the Psychoanalytic Candidates Organization (PACO).

Refund policy: After the 4th class session, there is no refund. Monies paid for classes when candidates withdraw from the program after the 4th class, will be applied as a credit, if the candidate returns to NJI. If a candidate withdraws before the 4th class, 1/2 tuition will be refunded. (This excludes the registration fee of $115).
